Beeswax is a natural occlusive — it forms a breathable, protective barrier on the skin's surface that locks in moisture and shields against environmental irritants without suffocating the skin. Unlike petroleum jelly (which does a similar job synthetically), beeswax allows for gas exchange, meaning your skin can still breathe and regulate itself underneath.

Beyond the barrier function, beeswax has documented antimicrobial properties. A study published in the Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine found that a honey-olive oil-beeswax mixture significantly outperformed antifungal and antibacterial treatments for certain skin conditions — with beeswax contributing meaningfully to the formula's protective effect.
